Pakistan asks India to resume implementation of IWT after Hague court ruling
Pakistan on Monday welcomed the Court of Arbitration’s latest ruling on the Kishanganga and Ratle hydroelectric projects dispute, calling on India to immediately and honestly comply with its international obligations under the Indus Waters Treaty.
In a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Pakistan referred to the Court’s partial award dated June 27, 2025, in which it reaffirmed its jurisdiction over the dispute and its responsibility to move forward with the proceedings in a timely, effective, and fair manner.
The Court of Arbitration had decided to maintain the cases concerning the Kishanganga and Ratle projects under a partial award, countering India’s repeated attempts to challenge the tribunal’s authority.
Foreign Office spokesperson Shafqat Ali Khan stated that this decision comes in direct response to India’s unilateral and unlawful attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, marking a significant legal setback for New Delhi on the international stage.
“This ruling validates Pakistan’s longstanding position that the Indus Waters Treaty remains fully in force, and that India has no right to unilaterally alter or suspend its obligations under the treaty,” the spokesperson emphasised.
Pakistan urged India to restore regular treaty mechanisms without delay and to fulfil its responsibilities with transparency and good faith, in accordance with the binding provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty.
