Karachi hit by thunderstorm
Last night, Karachi experienced a mix of heavy and light rain, accompanied by thunder, resulting in significant waterlogging across the city.
Areas such as Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Kathore, Steel Town, Gadap Town, Surjani, Safari Goth, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Mimar, and Sohrab Goth were particularly affected, with road flooding disrupting traffic flow and causing several motorcyclists to slip and sustain injuries.
Areas such as Nazimabad, Defence, Clifton, and the Old City also experienced heavy rain late into the night, exacerbating the situation in Malir, where water accumulation worsened.
Traffic jams were reported on major roads, including MA Jinnah Road, as a result of the flooding. During the downpour, K-Electric suspended power supply in several areas, further complicating the situation for residents.
In response to the heavy rainfall, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab conducted inspections in affected areas, accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Afzal Zaidi. They assessed conditions around Defence, Khayaban-e-Hilal, Clifton, Governor House, Sindh Assembly, and the Supreme Court building.
The mayor canceled the leave of municipal services staff and ordered that all emergency personnel remain on the roads. Commissioner Zaidi confirmed that suction pumps and staff have been deployed in low-lying areas to manage the water.
Meanwhile, intermittent rain continues to affect other Sindh cities, including Hyderabad. In a tragic incident in Tandojam, the roof of a madrasa collapsed, resulting in the deaths of two young students, Zahid (5) and Zain (6), while over 20 others were injured.
Rain has disrupted daily life in Tando Allahyar, Sajawal, Golarchi, Obaro, Khairpur, Mirpurkhas, Mithi, and Tando Muhammad Khan, with power outages reported in several areas due to feeder trips, leaving many residents in darkness overnight.
