Islamic perspective: is ‘Judgment Day’ closer than we think?
From climate catastrophes and artificial intelligence to global conflicts and economic instability, the world today feels more uncertain than ever.
Are these just the growing pains of progress, or are we inching closer to a tipping point—our own “Judgment Day?”
In one story, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) responded to the man’s question about the exact date of the Day of Judgment by asking him, “What have you prepared for it?”
This response shifted the focus from the timing to the individual’s preparedness for the event, emphasizing the importance of faith and righteous actions.
Dajjal
The first sign of Judgement Day near is Dajjal. The Dajjal will appear from a route located between the regions of the Levant and Iraq, and he will begin to call people to worship him. The majority of his followers will be Jews, women, and Bedouins.
Among them, seventy thousand Jews from Asfahan (in modern-day Iran) will follow him. He will travel across the entire earth, spreading his influence swiftly—like the wind driving rain in every direction—except for Makkah and Madinah, which he will be unable to enter.
His time on earth will last for forty days. The first day will feel as long as a year, the second like a month, the third like a week, and the remaining days will pass like normal days.
The Dajjal will be one-eyed, with one eye functioning and the other defective. Written between his eyes will be the Arabic letters “KA FA RA” (ك ف ر), meaning “disbeliever,” which only true believers will be able to recognize.
Hazrat Isa
Another sign in Islamic belief is that Jesus (Isa), son of Mary, will descend from the heavens to earth before the Day of Judgment.
He will not be a prophet at this time, but will rule as a just judge, following the laws of the Prophet Muhammad.
“There is not one of the People of the Scripture but will believe in him before his death, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be a witness against them” (An-Nisa’: 159).
He will descend by the white minaret in the east of Damascus, placing his hands upon the wings of two angels.
Yajooj Majoo (Gog and Magog)
Yajooj Majooj, also known as Gog and Magog in other religious texts, are figures in Islamic eschatology believed to be a destructive force that will appear before the end of the world.
They are mentioned in the Quran and are described as being trapped behind a barrier built by Zulqarnain (a figure believed to be Alexander the Great).
Their release is prophesied to be a major event signaling the approach of the Day of Judgment.
Hadith (sayings and traditions of the Prophet Muhammad) describe them as numerous and destructive, causing havoc and devastation.
Dabbat al-Ard
In Islam, the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard) is a creature that will emerge from the earth as one of the major signs of the Day of Judgment.
This creature will speak to people and distinguish between believers and disbelievers, marking them with a symbol.
“And when the word of torment is fulfilled against them, We shall bring out from the earth, a Beast for them, to speak to them because mankind believed not with certainty in Our signs.” (An-Naml: 82)
Sunrise from the West
“The Day that some of the signs of your Lord do come, no good will it do for a person to believe then, if he believed not before nor earned good (by doing good deeds), through his Faith.” (Al-An`aam: 158)
The sun rising from the west is a major sign of the end of the world and the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyāmah).
It signifies a time when repentance will no longer be accepted by Allah.
Three landslides
- One of the earliest major landslides to occur before the Day of Judgment will take place in the East. This event will be so powerful that it will lead to widespread destruction. While the precise location is not specified in the Qur’an or Hadith, many scholars believe it refers to a large-scale earthquake or landslide happening in the eastern regions of the world, potentially in or around the Arabian Peninsula, Asia, or nearby areas.
“When the sky has split open and when the mountains have been made to move.” (Surah At-Takwir 81:3)
- The second major landslide is expected to take place in the West, likely impacting areas around the Mediterranean. This disaster will also be extremely destructive, causing severe damage to both the land and human settlements.
- The third significant landslide will happen in the Arabian Peninsula, and this one is specifically mentioned in the Hadith. It will be so intense that it will drastically transform the region’s geography.
Great Smoke
It is described as a sign that will cause hardship for people before the final judgment.
“Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke.” (Surah Ad-Dukhan 44:10)
This smoke or haze will be a worldwide event, covering the atmosphere and bringing hardship—some accounts mention it will cause respiratory issues similar to a harsh cough or cold, particularly impacting disbelievers.
Some companions of the Prophet have explained that this smoke may persist for a specific duration, with certain reports suggesting it will last for forty days, and it will be extremely thick and overwhelming.
Appearance of Imam Mahdi
Imam Mahdi is described as a young man with a handsome face, a radiant forehead, and a prominent nose.
He will have black hair and beard and will be of medium stature.
He will emerge at the age of 40.
He will rule for a few years, during which peace and prosperity will increase.
Destruction of the Ka’aba
The destruction is prophesied to be carried out by a figure called Dhu’l-Suwayqatayn, from Abyssinia, who will desecrate and plunder the Ka’aba.
The destruction is not just a physical act but also a symbolic one, indicating the decline of faith and religious values.
“The people of Makkah will leave, and only a few people will pass through it. Then it will be resettled and rebuilt; then the people will leave it again, and no-one will ever return.” (Hadith reported by Omar Ibn al-Khattab).
Fire
A fire emerging from Yemen will be the last major sign before the Day of Judgment, driving people towards a place of gathering for judgment.
This fire is described in Islamic texts as a fiery portent that will compel all of humanity to a final assembly point.
This fire is closely linked to the concept of resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyāmah) in Islam, where all souls will be resurrected for final judgment.
Have any signs occurred yet?
The answer to the above question is yes and no, which provides a combination of different ideas for current signs of “Judgment Day.”
The major signs, such as the appearance of the Dajjal, the descent of Jesus, the emergence of Gog and Magog, and specific natural events, are still considered to be in the future.
One of the major signs of Judgement Day is Great Smoke; however, the wildfire in Israel on March 30 can be considered as one of the major warnings for this.
“If you see sins being committed and remain silent, you will be punished with them.” (Hadith reported by Tirmidhi)
However, Great Smoke is not specified yet. Many theories suggest it can be man-made. Hence, the use of nuclear weapons creates a cloud ball after its explosion.
It can be a sort of warfare among people in the current times, similar to the Hiroshima and Nagasaki event.
Another sign of this is climate change and weather shifts. The weather is changing with places becoming hotter to colder.
The basic instances include wildfire in Israel and Amazon, frequent earthquakes in Pakistan, melting of glaciers, warming of the Arctic, rise in sea levels and the southern Europe experiences wetter conditions.
In Islam, the return of greenery and rivers to the Arabian Peninsula is indeed seen as a sign of the Last Hour (Day of Judgment).
The Muhammadiyah Council for Tarjih and Tajdid Amiruddin staff stated that “it is not necessary to quickly conclude the natural phenomenon as a sign of the end of the day because sooner or later, it will come,” Muhammadiyah reported.
Also, the women dressing, behaving and wanting the same rank of women as well as men behaving and dressing like women.
The basic example of this is the rise in LGBTQ+ and Hollywood, which is gender non-conformity.
