PPP to support budget after key demands accepted, says Bilawal Bhutto
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has declared PPP’s full support for the federal budget after the government accepted all of its major demands.
Speaking during a session of the National Assembly on Thursday, Bilawal said the PPP stands by the budget “wholeheartedly,” especially after significant concessions were made in areas of social welfare, taxation, and economic justice.
Bilawal praised the government’s decision to increase funding for the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), stating that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had approved the largest-ever increase in BISP allocations.
“Our demand for a 20% increase in BISP funding was accepted, unlike during the PTI era when the budget for BISP was repeatedly slashed,” he remarked.
The PPP chairman also highlighted the government’s positive response to the party’s objections regarding the solar energy sector, revealing that taxes on solar panels have been cut by 50% following PPP protests.
In another key concession, Bilawal announced that the controversial powers granted to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) to arrest tax evaders had been amended.
“The government has removed harsh provisions in the FBR law. The authority to arrest will no longer be available at the initial stage and has now been made bailable,” he stated.
He further noted that salaried individuals earning up to Rs1.2 million annually will remain exempt from income tax — another demand endorsed by PPP.
Bilawal expressed gratitude to the government, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb for addressing the PPP’s concerns, enabling the party to back the federal budget in full.
