US President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised Pakistan’s army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, calling him a “good and impressive man.”

Addressing the NATO summit in The Hague, Trump also claimed he played a key role in preventing a potential war between nuclear-armed neighbours Pakistan and India.

Speaking to delegates, Trump said, “Had I not intervened, the tensions between the two countries could have escalated into a full-scale war.”

He added that he directly communicated with the leadership of both nations, delivering a firm message: “If you go to war, there will be no trade deal.”

According to Trump, the warning had a tangible impact. “Both sides showed restraint. The Pakistani Army Chief came to my office last week. Field Marshal Asim Munir is a good and inspiring person. He understood the situation well and responded positively,” Trump said.

Trump also mentioned his conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I told Modi the same — no trade if there’s war. He said he wants trade, not nuclear conflict,” Trump recalled.

Turning to other international matters, Trump stated that talks with Iran are expected next week and hinted at the possibility of a new agreement. “We’re ready. If Iran is serious, a deal could be signed,” he said.

Trump further suggested the US may consider providing Ukraine with advanced missile defence systems.

“The missile defence system we gave Israel proved highly effective. We will assess if Ukraine can be offered the same,” he added.
