Iran expresses regret to Qatar over missile strikes on US base
Iran has expressed regret to Qatar over the distress caused by its recent missile attack on a US military base located in Qatar, clarifying that the operation was not aimed at the Gulf state.
In an interview with Arab media, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei conveyed personal regret, stating, “We are sincerely sorry for any discomfort caused to our Qatari brothers and sisters.”
He emphasised that the missile strike on the American base was a defensive response to US aggression, not an act against Qatar’s sovereignty, for which it has “high respect”.
Baghaei reaffirmed that Tehran holds its ties with Doha in high regard, adding, “We maintain deep respect in our relationship with Qatar, and value its constructive role in the region.”
Responding to broader questions about Iran’s strategic intentions, Baghaei also addressed Iran’s nuclear programme, stating, “Iran will continue its pursuit of peaceful nuclear energy. It is our right under international law.”
He criticised the global focus on potential damage to nuclear facilities instead of condemning what he described as unlawful US attacks.
“The world should prioritise condemning America’s illegal actions rather than discussing the effectiveness of their strikes,” he said, calling such discussions “a troubling sign.”
Baghaei concluded by asserting that recent American strikes were a direct blow to international law, diplomacy, and ethics.
