Bezos, Sanchez head to Venice for wedding party, want to know facts and figures?
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez will arrive in Venice on Wednesday, a source and local media said, for three days of lavish VIP parties to celebrate their wedding in the romantic lagoon city despite protests from locals.
Around 90 private jets are set to land in local airports this week, bringing A-listers from showbusiness, politics and finance to the widely-dubbed “wedding of the century” that will cost Bezos an estimated 40-48 million euros ($46-$56 million).
Festivities will kick off on Thursday night with an open-air gathering in the cloisters of Madonna dell’Orto, a medieval church in the central area of Cannaregio known for its lively nightlife, a source close to the matter told Reuters.
Stringent security may be needed here to isolate the celebrities from activists who have been protesting for weeks that the celebrations will turn the city of gondolas and palazzi into a private amusement park for the rich.
“There’s only one thing that rules now: money, money, money, so we are the losers,” said Venice resident Nadia Rigo.
“We who were born here have to either move to the mainland or we have to ask them for permission to board a ferry. They’ve become the masters.”
The date and venue of the wedding itself are still unknown and some have speculated that Bezos, 61, and Sanchez, 55, may already have tied the knot in a private ceremony back in the United States.
Most of the estimated 250 guests are expected to arrive in time for the second party, which the source said is slated for Friday on the small island of San Giorgio, in front of the famed St. Mark’s Square with its 99-metre-high (108 yard) bell tower.
San Giorgio island is home to the Cini Foundation, which organises international cultural and political meetings in an ancient monastery dating back to the year 1000, with a maze in the garden.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and journalist Lauren Sanchez have invited scores of VIPs from film, finance and show business to Venice this week for three days of wedding celebrations.
Here are some facts and figures about what has been dubbed the “Wedding of the Century,” much of which has been kept secret, including details about the guest list and the exact cost of festivities.
55-MILLION DOLLAR OCCASION
The wedding and its parts are expected to cost 40-48 million euros ($46.5 - $55.6 million), Luca Zaia, president of the Veneto regional government that comprises Venice, told reporters on Tuesday.
Bezos will make sizeable charity donations, including 1 million euros for Corila, an academic consortium that studies Venice’s lagoon ecosystem, Italy’s Corriere della Sera newspaper and the ANSA news agency reported on Sunday.
VENUE
The day and the venue for the wedding ceremony itself are still confidential, but the main party is slated for Saturday at the Arsenale (the Arsenal), a historical site in the eastern part of the city.
This highly fortified area, surrounded by imposing walls, was used to build the Republic of Venice’s naval ships in its 15th-century heyday.
90 PRIVATE JETS, 30 WATER TAXIS
The first private jets arrived at Venice airport on Tuesday, and Zaia said around 90 will land at Venice and nearby airports such as Treviso and Verona over the next few days.
US President Donald Trump’s daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who had been holidaying in Tuscany, arrived in Venice on Tuesday.
The organisers have also booked at least 30 water taxis from different companies in Venice for the wedding guests.
FIVE HOTELS FOR 250 GUESTS
Five of the city’s most luxurious hotels have been booked out to host an expected 200-250 guests. The hotels include Cipriani on the island of Giudecca, and the Aman on the Grand Canal, where US actor George Clooney stayed for his 2014 wedding with human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.
