Global media reveals backchannel diplomacy behind Iran-Israel ceasefire
International media has unveiled the behind-the-scenes developments that led to the ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
According to media reports, Israeli Prime Minister agreed to the ceasefire following a phone call from US President Donald Trump, while Qatar’s leadership played a key role in convincing Iran to accept the truce.
Reports by US outlets CNN and The New York Times indicate that after Iran launched a missile attack on the American military base in Qatar, President Trump, along with Vice President JD Vance and his top diplomatic and security team, immediately initiated behind-the-scenes efforts to de-escalate the situation.
President Trump personally spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, after which Israel agreed to a ceasefire.
Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State, National Security Advisor Marco Rubio, and Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff remained in contact with Iranian leadership through direct and indirect channels.
A senior White House official revealed that at one point, President Trump himself called Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
During the conversation, Trump informed the Emir that the US had successfully persuaded Israel to agree to a ceasefire and requested that Qatar help convince Iran to accept the terms.
Vice President Vance also engaged with the office of Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani. Following discussions with Sheikh Al Thani, Iran agreed to the ceasefire proposal. President Trump later thanked the Emir of Qatar for his assistance in the mediation efforts.
