Minister directs Discos to ensure uninterrupted power supply during Moharram
Federal Minister for Power, Awais Leghari, has instructed all power distribution companies (Discos) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply throughout the month of Moharram, particularly during religious gatherings, to prevent any inconvenience to the public.
In a letter addressed to all chairmen and CEOs of Discos, the minister emphasized the importance of reliable power supply during the sacred month, during which millions of mourners across Pakistan attend Majalis and processions in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).
“Since the holy month of Moharram is falling in the month of July and heat waves are expected, it is very much imperative that all necessary measures are taken to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to facilitate these religious gatherings and avoid any inconvenience to the public,” he added.
To ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Moharram, the minister issued the following urgent directives to all chairmen and CEOs of power distribution companies (Discos):
- Pre-emptive Maintenance and Load Management
- Carry out detailed inspections of all transmission and distribution systems, especially in areas where Majalis and processions are planned.
- Repair or replace any faulty equipment in advance to prevent power outages.
- Deployment of Emergency Response Teams
- Position dedicated teams on high alert throughout Moharram, particularly on the 9th and 10th, to respond promptly to any power disruptions.
- Coordination with Stakeholders
- Collaborate with district administrations, law enforcement, and religious organizers to identify key locations requiring uninterrupted power and backup supply options.
- Consumer Communication
- Maintain proactive communication with consumers, especially Imambargahs and mosques regarding any planned maintenance or load management to minimize inconvenience.
- Backup Power Arrangements
- Ensure the availability of standby generators and UPS systems at sensitive locations to provide power in case of unexpected grid failures.
- Provision of Additional Equipment
- Keep an adequate stock of transformers and essential materials in each sub-division.
- Regularly update inventory records to reflect availability.
- 24/7 Staff Availability
- Create and enforce duty rosters to guarantee round-the-clock presence of technical and operational staff during the month of Moharram.
- Establishment of Control Centres

Set up dedicated control centres at all operational levels.

Publicize their contact numbers to facilitate effective coordination and quick response.
Leghari emphasized that the sanctity of Moharram requires utmost dedication and seriousness, adding that any negligence will be dealt with strictly.
The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating peaceful religious observance by ensuring reliable and respectful service to the public.
