Trump’s Iran strikes without Congressional approval spark political uproar in Washington
Tensions are rising in Washington following President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to order military strikes on Iran without seeking congressional approval.
Leading Democratic lawmakers, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, have called on the president to immediately clarify the rationale and strategy behind the unexpected escalation.
“President Trump authorized a military strike on Iran without Congressional authorization,” said Senator Schumer.
“He owes the American people and their elected representatives a clear explanation of the motivations, the strategic objectives, and the implications for US national security.”
Schumer emphasized that no president should be allowed to take unilateral military action that risks provoking unforeseen dangers without a defined strategy.
“We must enforce the War Powers Act,” he added, referring to the 1973 legislation that limits the president’s ability to engage in military conflicts without congressional consent.
Other Senate Democrats echoed these concerns. Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Jack Reed urged the administration to prioritize de-escalation, diplomacy, and multilateral engagement in the wake of the strikes.
“America must not rush into war with Iran,” warned Senator Shaheen.
Senator Reed added, “We are at a perilous juncture that could destabilize the entire region. We need to prepare for the long term and adopt a sustainable strategy.”
Democratic lawmakers stressed that while initiating a conflict may be politically expedient, ending a war is far more difficult.
The current crisis, they argued, requires leadership focused on de-escalation and long-term stability—not confrontation.
The backlash in Congress reflects broader anxieties about the consequences of military escalation with Iran, particularly when undertaken without a clear legal framework or exit strategy.
