Malir Jailbreak: Police continue search operation as 52 inmates are still on the run
The escape of 225 prisoners from Karachi’s District Jail Malir continues to pose a serious challenge to law enforcement, as 52 inmates remain on the run nearly two weeks after the jailbreak. Authorities have so far managed to return 172 inmates to custody, while one prisoner reportedly committed suicide.
According to police officials, the majority of the inmates were either arrested during search operations or returned voluntarily with the help of their families. “Search operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining 52 fugitives,” a senior officer stated.
The jailbreak occurred during a violent riot inside the jail on the night of June 3. In the chaos, one prisoner was killed on the spot, and several prison and Frontier Corps (FC) personnel sustained injuries.
The incident led to the suspension of key jail officials, including the superintendent and deputy superintendent. An internal inquiry is underway, while special teams continue to conduct raids in different areas to locate the remaining escapees.

“Many families cooperated with law enforcement by returning their relatives to jail voluntarily,” the police said, adding that others were tracked down and arrested during targeted raids.
Officials have described the investigation as “ongoing on a large scale” and expressed confidence that the remaining escapees will be captured soon.
The jailbreak has raised serious questions over the state of prison security in Sindh and prompted calls for urgent reforms in the provincial corrections system.
