National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has refused to unilaterally form a parliamentary committee regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commission members from Sindh and Balochistan.

In response to a letter from Leader of the Opposition Omar Ayub, who had proposed six names from the opposition for the committee, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq emphasized that the committee will only be formed after consultations between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the opposition leader.

Speaker Sadiq stated in his written reply that the process will commence once both leaders submit their proposed names.

“Only after receiving nominations from the prime minister and the opposition leader will names be sought from parliamentary leaders for the committee’s formation,” he clarified.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had initiated the consultation process through a letter sent to Omar Ayub on May 16, seeking input on the appointments.

However, no formal names have yet been exchanged by either side for the committee.

The appointments in question include the Chief Election Commissioner and members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from Sindh and Balochistan.
