The Sindh government has taken sweeping administrative action, following a mass jailbreak at Malir Jail, removing the Inspector General of Prisons from office and suspending the DIG Prisons along with the Superintendent of Malir Jail.

The move was confirmed by Sindh Home Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon during a media briefing.

Memon revealed that 129 inmates escaped from Malir Jail but clarified that none of them were considered hardcore criminals. He said police teams are actively hunting the fugitives and assured that efforts are underway for their immediate re-arrest.

The Home Minister announced that prisoners who voluntarily return within 24 hours will not face severe legal action. However, those who do not surrender in time will be booked under jailbreaking charges, which could result in up to seven years of imprisonment.

“The removal of the IG Prisons is part of broader disciplinary action being taken against all responsible officials,” Memon stated.

In response to the jailbreak, a high-level security meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Sindh Home Minister to assess the current law and order situation and to craft a comprehensive strategy for apprehending the escaped prisoners.

The meeting was attended by the Home Secretary, Law Secretary, and IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon. During the session, the IG directed that all available resources be deployed to capture the escapees.
