French president slapped by wife? Couple’s Vietnam arrival stirs online buzz
A video clip showing an unexpected moment between French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, during their arrival in Vietnam has sparked intense speculation and humour across social media platforms.
The incident occurred as the French first couple landed in Hanoi, the Vietnamese capital, marking the start of their Southeast Asia tour. In a video released by the Associated Press (AP), President Macron is seen emerging from the aircraft door, only to be met by what appears to be a swift motion from Brigitte Macron’s arms. With both hands, she seemingly pushes his face back in a gesture that many online interpreted as a “slap.”
President Macron briefly looks surprised but quickly regains composure and waves to the awaiting crowd. As the couple descends the aircraft stairs, Brigitte notably declines to link arms with her husband despite his visible gesture, maintaining some distance as they proceed together.
The footage quickly went viral, particularly among social media accounts critical of the French president. Initially, the Élysée Palace denied the authenticity of the footage, but later acknowledged the event.

Speaking to the French news agency AFP, sources close to the president described the moment as a “minor domestic spat.” Another insider downplayed the scene, stating that the president and his wife were sharing a light private moment before the start of an intense diplomatic tour. It was taken out of context by conspiracy-minded commentators.
President Macron’s week-long tour includes stops in Indonesia and Singapore after Vietnam. The strategic goal of the trip is to position France as a trustworthy partner in the Asia-Pacific, presenting an alternative to the competing influences of the United States and China.
