In a groundbreaking move to improve access to emergency medical care in Karachi’s densely populated neighbourhoods and narrow lanes, a cycle ambulance service has been launched by Rescue 1122.

This initiative aims to reach areas where traditional ambulances often face difficulty navigating due to congestion and infrastructure limitations. Uniquely, the cycle ambulances are operated by trained female volunteers, making it not only an innovative healthcare solution but also a significant step toward women’s empowerment.

Despite their modest appearance, the cycle ambulances are fully equipped with essential medical tools, including oxygen masks, sugar testing kits, nebulisers, and other first-aid supplies, enabling responders to provide immediate care on-site.

Brigadier (R) Tariq Qadir, CEO of Rescue 1122, said the service is environmentally friendly, efficient, and symbolizes female empowerment. He termed the project a vital step toward extending basic healthcare services to the common citizen, especially in underserved areas.

The female volunteers called their participation a source of pride, expressing a strong sense of duty and commitment to serving the public.

The initiative has received praise from citizens, who see it as a practical and impactful step towards improving healthcare accessibility in informal settlements.

More than just a medical response service, the cycle ambulances also reflect a broader vision of social progress and inclusive community support.
