PTI spokesperson say party requires time for mobilization before street protests
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) spokesperson, whiling hinting at launching a protest movement, has said that the party requires time to mobilize before taking to the streets.
PTI Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram on Monday categorically denied holding any backdoor negotiations with the government or the establishment, as he signaled a return to street politics amid the current political deadlock.
Sheikh Waqas Akram, while speaking to party members and media, indicated that the party is considering launching an anti-government protest movement. He said a decision in this regard would be taken after carefully assessing the political environment, adding that proper mobilisation would require some time.
“The call for protest will be made in due course, but effective mobilisation is key,” he stated. PTI has assigned special tasks to provincial leadership in preparation for the potential campaign, and the party’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president, Junaid Akbar, has reportedly been in contact with leaders from other provinces. A formal announcement of the protest schedule is expected soon.
Party sources have reaffirmed that no back-channel communication is currently taking place with either the ruling coalition or the military establishment. They said that the political process has slowed significantly following the 26th constitutional amendment, affecting overall momentum.
Meanwhile, efforts to forge a grand opposition alliance have reportedly suffered a setback. According to PTI insiders, despite multiple rounds of talks with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), the latter has continued to delay its response, citing internal consultations with its party council.
Commenting on the situation, Sheikh Waqas Akram said that JUI-F may not be interested in becoming part of a grand opposition alliance.
Amid this political uncertainty, PTI is preparing to ramp up its public engagement efforts. Party officials say a renewed public contact campaign and schedule for protest rallies may be announced in the coming days.
