The interim government of Bangladesh has announced a ban on the Awami League, the political party of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a related development, amendments to the International Crimes Tribunal Act have been approved, enabling legal action against political parties and associated institutions.

The Awami League has condemned this decision as illegitimate, rejecting the interim government’s actions.

Collapse of Sheikh Hasina’s government and her subsequent flight

Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year rule came to an abrupt end on August 5,2024 following a violent public uprising triggered by a student movement.

In the aftermath, the 77-year-old Hasina fled to India. She is currently facing over 100 charges, including allegations of genocide and corruption, while numerous ministers and party leaders have been arrested or have left the country.
