India suspends 200 flights, shuts 20 airports amid Pak-India tensions
In response to escalating tensions with Pakistan, India has suspended operations at 20 airports across northern and western regions until May 10, leading to the cancellation of at least 200 domestic flights, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The suspension, which affects key strategic locations, was announced by Indian authorities, citing operational and security concerns. No flights will take off from these airports until 5:29 AM on May 10, Indian carriers stated.
According to Air India, the following airports are completely shut: Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Amritsar, Jodhpur, Bhuj, Jamnagar, Chandigarh, and Rajkot.
Air India further stated that two international flights bound for Amritsar were diverted to Delhi amid the ongoing restrictions.
Flight durations for Indian carriers operating from northern and western India to Mumbai have increased due to altered air routes. In a related development, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced that its flights from Amsterdam to Delhi and Mumbai will be extended by 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes, although they will remain nonstop.
Aviation experts warn that more delays and suspensions could follow if the regional situation deteriorates further. Passengers are advised to stay updated via airline advisories and monitor changes in flight schedules closely.
