PM Shehbaz summons urgent cabinet meeting amid tensions with India
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned an urgent and high-level meeting of the federal cabinet, scheduled for 4 PM on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s House, to consult on the escalating tensions with India and review internal and border security developments.
According to sources, the cabinet will receive briefings on the current state of Pakistan-India relations following recent provocative moves by New Delhi. The agenda also includes discussions on preparations for the upcoming federal budget.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions after India, in response to an April 22 attack on local tourists in Pahalgam, levelled baseless allegations against Pakistan, suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, and directed Pakistani diplomatic staff to leave India by April 30, 2025.
In retaliation, Pakistan’s National Security Committee adopted a firm diplomatic stance, restricting India’s diplomatic staff in Islamabad to 30 and declaring that any attempt to block water flow would be considered an act of war, as water is Pakistan’s lifeline.

India has also taken other hostile steps, including revoking visas issued to Pakistani citizens.
Meanwhile, the UN, China, and other international players have urged both countries to exercise restraint, with Switzerland and Iran offering to mediate.
Additionally, Pakistan successfully requested a UN Security Council meeting, where its permanent representative highlighted India’s provocative actions, including unilateral military decisions announced on April 23. He warned that such measures are unjust, dangerous, and could lead to catastrophic consequences.
