The by-election for the vacant general seat of the Senate from Sindh is taking place on Tuesday (today).

Voting started at 9:00am and will continue without interruption until 4:00pm in the Sindh Assembly hall.

The Election Commission of Sindh confirmed that it has completed all arrangements for the polling.

Officials have ensured security and other facilities to carry out the election transparently and peacefully.

The seat became vacant after the death of senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Senator Taj Haider.

Moreover, PPP has fielded Senator Waqar Mehdi as its candidate, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM)’s Nighat Mirza is contesting against him.

According to the current numbers in the Sindh Assembly, 116 PPP members and 36 MQM members are expected to vote.

Meanwhile, independent members backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have boycotted the election.

The PTI’s parliamentary leader in the assembly, Shabbir Ali Qureshi, announced that none of their members will take part in the voting.
