Renowned Indian poet, lyricist, and screenwriter Javed Akhtar — known for iconic films like Deewar and Sholay — has come under heavy criticism in Pakistan for his recent anti-Pakistan statements.

Although Akhtar has visited Pakistan multiple times in the past and was warmly welcomed at esteemed literary events like the Faiz Festival, his latest comments have cast a shadow over those cultural exchanges.

In a recent interview, Akhtar adopted a scathing tone when speaking about Pakistan and its artists. He said: At the moment, it’s not possible for Pakistani artists to work in India. Those who do come here benefit from a one-way relationship. Also, if we stop them from coming altogether, how will they show their people the kind of freedom and rights Indians enjoy?

The remarks were widely perceived as patronising and dismissive, sparking backlash from several Pakistani celebrities.

Actress Mansha Pasha responded, “Those who repeatedly invite him and sit at his feet should now question whether this is truly justified.”

TV host and actress Mishi Khan echoed the sentiment, “Those inviting such people need to show some self-respect now.”

Actor Aqeel Malik also termed Akhtar’s comments “deeply disappointing.”

Public outrage on social media

The public reaction on social media was swift and angry. One user wrote: “You sat at their feet, and in return, they really made you sit down.”

Another commented: “Our artists are incredibly talented, yet they continue trying to please people like this.”

A third added: “India has truly insulted those Pakistani artists who wish to work there.”

The incident has reignited debates in Pakistan about whether certain Indian figures should continue to be welcomed at cultural events, especially when mutual respect appears lacking.
