Over 60% of KU flooded as 84-inch pipeline bursts, disrupting water supply
A major disruption in water supply has gripped Karachi after an 84-inch diameter pipeline burst, flooding large parts of the city and submerging around 60% of the University of Karachi (KU) campus.
Water inundated residential colonies within the university, effectively suspending academic activities without any official announcement. Several city areas are also facing severe water shortages due to the incident.
Water Corporation CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui visited the affected pipeline site inside KU and reviewed the ongoing repair work. According to the spokesperson, the CEO assessed the pace, quality, and logistical arrangements of the repair operation, directing officials to ensure timely completion without delay.
A team from the Water Corporation remains actively engaged in restoring water supply to the university. The Chief Engineer briefed the CEO on the repair status and assured that the work would be completed on time.

Siddiqui emphasised that no delay would be tolerated in restoring the water supply and that the repairs must be completed within the assigned timeline.
So far, millions of gallons of water have gone to waste. Residents living on campus, including students and staff, were unable to attend school or work due to the flooding. Karachi Mayor has noted that the University Road pipeline is 69 years old, and the city’s water infrastructure remains largely neglected. Further investigations are underway.
This is not the first such incident. The same 84-inch main supply line, which provides water to much of Karachi, has burst multiple times in the past. Earlier in February, a rupture between Hassan Square and Jail Chowrangi led to street flooding and caused water tankers to sink into the road.
