Maryam Nawaz to launch bullet train project from Lahore to Rawalpindi
The Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, has approved the decision to launch Pakistan’s first high-speed “bullet train” from Lahore to Rawalpindi, and a working group has been formed to implement the project.
Under the direction of the Chief Minister, a first meeting was held under the leadership of Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb and Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Hanif Abbasi.
Maryam Aurangzeb announced that a working group would be formed, comprising Provincial Minister for Transport Punjab Bilal Akbar Khan, Punjab Chief Minister’s Adviser Shahid Tarar, the Railway Chairman, and the Railway CEO. The working group will prepare the project’s feasibility and timeline. Maryam Aurangzeb will present the group’s recommendations to the Chief Minister next week.
Bilal Akbar Khan joined the meeting via video link, while Secretary of Transport Imran Sikander Baloch and Secretary of Planning and Development Asif Tufail attended the meeting in person.
Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb stated that by launching the bullet train, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz will fulfil another promise made to the public. The Chief Minister aims to provide the people with affordable, fast, and comfortable travel options. The vision is to modernise the train system to international standards.
Maryam Aurangzeb further added that, under the Chief Minister’s direction, the upgradation of Lahore and Rawalpindi railway stations would also be included in the plan. Additionally, with the cooperation of the Punjab Tourism Department, efforts will be made to beautify the Rawalpindi to Lahore track.
The proposed bullet train will complete the distance between Lahore and Rawalpindi in just 2 to 2.5 hours, offering a fast and efficient travel option.
