A litigant set himself on fire in the Lahore High Court premises on Tuesday, as rescue officials rushed to the person.

Emergency services arrived at the scene and transported the individual to the nearest hospital for treatment.

The person was named Asif Javed, a Khanewal resident. He had filed an appeal against his dismissal from employment. LHC judge Justice Shoaijat Ali Khan presided over the hearing.

In the proceedings, Javed’s lawyer sought additional time to submit the power of attorney.

Lawyer Athar Chaudhry informed the court that he had been appointed as the new counsel and requested an extension for submitting the power of attorney. Justice Khan granted the request regarding the submission of the power of attorney.

The litigant had previously changed his lawyer, opting to engage Athar Aziz Chaudhry as his new legal representative.

Javed was dismissed by a private company in 2016. In 2019, the labour court declared his dismissal “invalid and reinstated him in his job.”

The private company challenged the decision in the National Industrial Relations Commission. On November 23, 2020, the commission rejected the company’s appeal. Later, the company moved high court in December 2020 to challenge the decision.

In a separate development, upon the arrival in the court premises, LHC Chief Justice Aalia Neelam took notice of the incident and sought a report from the inspector general of Punjab regarding the situation.
