Matthew Breetzke becomes first batter to score 150 runs on ODI debut
South African cricketer Matthew Breetzke scored 150 on Monday, setting the record for the highest debut score in ODI history, as South Africa posted 304-6 against New Zealand in the tri-nation series in Pakistan.
Breetzke, who hit 11 fours and five sixes, surpassed the 148 runs scored by Desmond Haynes on his debut for the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 1978.
He formed a 37-run opening partnership with captain Temba Bavuma (20) and a further 93 runs for the second wicket with Jason Smith (41), establishing a solid foundation for South Africa.
Breetzke reached his century by hitting a boundary off New Zealand pacer Will O’Rourke, bringing his total to three figures off 128 balls, making him the fourth South African to score a century on ODI debut, joining Reeza Hendricks, Tony de Zorzi, and Colin Ingram.
He achieved his 150 runs with a six off fast bowler Ben Sears before being caught by Michael Bracewell off Matt Henry in the 46th over.
Wiaan Mulder contributed with a brisk 64 runs off 60 balls, including five fours and a six, helping South Africa surpass the 300-run mark.
For New Zealand, Henry took 2 wickets for 59 runs, while O’Rourke claimed 2 for 72.
Due to top players being engaged in a Twenty20 league or recovering from injuries, South Africa had to field four debutants in this match.
New Zealand made one change as opener Devon Conway replaced Rachin Ravindra, who was injured during their recent 78-run victory over Pakistan, also in Lahore.
