One of India’s premier off-spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin, has announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday. The 38-year-old, celebrated for his match-winning performances and exceptional spin bowling, concludes a 13-year career that has left a significant impact on Indian cricket.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed Ashwin’s retirement via a social media post

The BCCI recognized his contributions to the game.

“Thank You Ashwin. A name synonymous with mastery, wizardry, brilliance, and innovation. Congratulations on a legendary career,” the statement read.

During a press conference, he stated, “Today is my last day as an international cricketer.” His decision to retire came after speculation arose from a viral video of former captain Virat Kohli warmly embracing him post-match.

Ashwin made his debut in 2010 and played a crucial role in India’s success in home Test matches, forming a strong spin partnership with Ravindra Jadeja. His ability to innovate and adapt made him a key player in India’s red-ball achievements.

Ashwin retires as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, with 537 wickets in 106 matches, trailing only Anil Kumble, who has 619. In total, he claimed 775 wickets across all formats, including 37 five-wicket hauls in Tests.
