11 killed in protest outside US consulate in karachi; Police file terrorism charges

Legal action has been taken over rioting and firing during a protest outside the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, police said on Tuesday, as authorities confirmed 11 deaths and launched disciplinary proceedings against senior officers over security lapses.

Police have registered three separate cases in connection with the incident, which took place in one of the city’s most sensitive areas. 31 injured people are receiving treatment at various hospitals, officials said.

The Docks police station registered the cases on behalf of the government, invoking charges including murder, attempted murder, terrorism and rioting.

According to the text of the First Information Report, protesters attempted to break through the security fence and enter the consulate premises, vandalise the building and set it on fire.

During the unrest, a traffic police post, an armoured vehicle and other government equipment were also set ablaze.

Separately, the Inspector General of Sindh ordered action over what authorities described as failures in security and crowd control.

Five officers, including the Senior Superintendent of Police for Keamari, were removed from their posts, and an inquiry was launched against additional officers to ensure a transparent investigation.

Police officials said efforts were underway to identify suspects with the help of CCTV footage.
