First total lunar eclipse of 2026 to be visible today

The first total lunar eclipse of 2026 will take place today, according to the Meteorological Department, with the event beginning in Pakistan at 1:44 pm.

Officials said the eclipse will start affecting the Moon at 2:50 pm.

The total phase will begin at 4:05 pm, reach its peak at 5:45 pm and end at 6:17 pm. The eclipse will conclude completely at 7:23 pm.

The phenomenon, commonly known as a “blood moon,” occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking sunlight.

At times, sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere gives the Moon a deep red colour.

The eclipse will be partially visible in Pakistan as the Moon rises.

It will also be seen in parts of eastern India and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

The best viewing conditions are expected in the Pacific Ocean region, New Zealand, Australia, East Asia and western North America, while most of Europe and Africa will not be able to see it.

The event is considered a notable opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts and skywatchers.
