Pir Muhammad Shah reinstated as Karachi DIG Traffic

The Sindh government has reinstated Syed Pir Muhammad Shah as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police in Karachi, taking back the charge from the current DIG, Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh.

The Services and General Administration Department issued a notification stating that the appointment had been made with the approval of the Sindh chief secretary and is effective immediately.

Pir Muhammad Shah, a Grade-20 officer of the Pakistan Police Service, has previously served in the same position.

He was removed from the post some time ago following allegations of attempted kidnapping and extortion lodged against him by a local businessman.

According to records, a case was registered on December 19, 2025, in Hyderabad, seeking the recovery of Rs31 crore.

The complaint was lodged by a trader, Danish Mateen.

According to the complainant, on January 14, while travelling from Phase 6 of the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to his office, three men in a white car stopped him and tried to forcibly take him to their vehicle.

Two of the alleged assailants were reportedly in police uniforms and demanded more than Rs31 crore from him.

Danish Mateen further claimed that on the same day, he received a phone call at his residence demanding a ransom of Rs3 million.

He stated that he was later released near the highway after paying Rs1 million and returned to his office around 11.30pm.

A formal complaint was filed at the Gizri police station on January 22.

SSP Hyderabad later confirmed that three personnel implicated in the case, including one ASI and two constables, have been suspended.

Investigating authorities later said that preliminary inquiries indicate the involvement of Hyderabad police officials.

In light of the incident, the position of DIG Traffic Karachi was previously changed, with Pir Muhammad Shah removed and Mazhar Nawaz Shaikh assigned the responsibilities.

His reinstatement marks a reversal of that earlier decision.
