Six killed in multiple shootings in eastern Mississippi, suspect in custody

Six people were killed in a series of related shootings across three locations in eastern Mississippi, and a suspect is in custody, authorities said, according to the Associated Press and local media outlet WTVA.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said in a Facebook post that “multiple innocent lives” were lost “due to violence” in the town of West Point, near the Alabama border.

He told WTVA that the six deaths occurred at three separate crime scenes.

Authorities said the shootings took place on Friday night, and a person was taken into custody by Saturday. The sheriff said there was no additional threat to the community.

“A suspect is in custody, and there is no threat to the community,” Scott wrote on Facebook.

“I ask that you lift our victims and their families in your prayers. Law enforcement is busy investigating and will release an update as soon as possible.”

Scott told NBC News that some of the victims were related to the shooter, though officials did not release the identities of the victims or further details about the incidents.

“Unfortunately, tonight we have dealt with tragedy in our community,” Scott said in another Facebook post about the shootings.

The sheriff’s office said a morning news conference was planned to provide more information. Officials said the motive for the shootings remains under investigation.
