The threat of polio in Lahore has resurfaced, as the National Institute of Health (NIH) detected the virus in sewage samples from major disposal stations in the city.

According to sources, samples taken from Outfall Road, Gulshan Ravi, and Multan Road disposal stations tested positive for the polio virus.

The report revealed that for the past two years, the continuous presence of polio in Lahore’s sewage system has been consistently recorded.

Health experts have warned that the persistent presence of the virus in sewage poses a serious health risk to children in urban areas.

They emphasised the urgent need to strengthen polio immunisation campaigns and enhance monitoring measures to prevent outbreaks.

The findings have raised concerns over the effectiveness of existing vaccination efforts, highlighting the critical importance of improving outreach and surveillance to protect vulnerable populations.

Officials stress that ongoing vigilance and enhanced polio eradication campaigns are essential to safeguard the health of children and prevent the resurgence of this debilitating disease.
