Prince William made a royal appearance in the “Dancing With the Stars” ballroom, virtually.
On November 11, the Prince of Wales appeared via FaceTime during the show’s 20th anniversary broadcast, catching Robert Irwin and his dance partner Witney Carson by surprise with words of encouragement.
“Guys, you’ve got a seriously good chance of winning it,” William told the duo in the pre-performance video package. “So, just the best of luck on the show.”
He also playfully teased Robert for missing the Earthshot Prize Awards Ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 5.
He said, “We’re missing you, Robert. “Whilst your twinkle toes are going off elsewhere, I need you down here.”
To Witney, he added, “You need to get him in as much glitter as you can.”
Robert’s week didn’t end with Prince William’s virtual surprise.
His sister, Bindi Irwin, who won the Mirrorball trophy with Derek Hough in 2015, dropped by with her 5-year-old daughter, Grace Warrior.
Later, Bindi joined Robert and Witney on the dance floor as they concluded their foxtrot performance to Leona Lewis’ “Footprints in the Sand,” the same song she had performed to during her season.
The emotional moment came when a surprise video of Robert and Bindi’s late father, Steve Irwin, played, leaving everyone in the room in tears and hugging each other.
When Robert saw his father on the ballroom floor, tears welled up in his eyes, and Witney and Bindi immediately pulled him in to a tight comfort hug.
Derek Hough, judging from the panel, praised Robert, saying, “I feel so honoured to be entangled in the Irwin story, just even a little bit.
It meant the world to me. One of my favourite things about your father was how enthusiastic he was about life.
He added, “And you, my friend, are the source of excitement and passion for this generation.” “My friend, you’re not simply following your father’s path; you’re dancing it, and you’re dancing it brilliantly.”
They go to the finals when Robert and Witney’s performance gave them a perfect score of 40 points, their first of the season.
