Karachi braces for more traffic chaos as University Road set to close

Karachi residents are set to face further traffic chaos as the authorities on Sunday announced the closure of University Road from November 10 to December 30.

According to officials, fresh digging and other work along the University Road will be carried out under the Karachi Water and Sewerage System Improvement Project (KWSSIP).

The project, which involves laying new water pipelines, will affect traffic flow already strained by the ongoing Red Line and BRT construction projects.

According to officials, the section of University Road between Nipa Chowrangi and Federal Urdu University will remain closed from November 10 to December 30 to facilitate the laying of pipelines.

“The closure is necessary for laying new 96-inch and 72-inch pipelines as part of the K-IV augmentation plan,” said a senior official.

“This stretch will form part of a new network that’s crucial for improving the city’s water supply.”

The project aims to install a water network spanning approximately 7 kilometres.

The work will be carried out in two phases: the first phase will cover Nipa to Federal Urdu University, while the second phase will extend from Hussain Square to Nipa Chowrangi.

Authorities have urged commuters to plan alternate routes, as traffic congestion on University Road is expected to increase during the construction period.
