A tragic incident occurred in the federal capital on Thursday as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Adeel Akbar allegedly shot himself, resulting in his death, officials said.
According to a spokesperson for Islamabad Police, the officer sustained a fatal gunshot wound while sitting inside his vehicle.
ASP Akbar, serving as SP I-9, was reportedly on his way to the office from Constitution Avenue when the incident took place.
Police sources said the officer allegedly grabbed a pistol from his gunman near Serena Chowk and shot himself. He was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries shortly after.
Authorities have cordoned off the area and collected forensic evidence from the scene. The gunman and other police personnel present at the time of the incident have been taken into custody for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation.
Sources said Adeel Akbar hailed from Gujrat district and belonged to the 46th Common of the Police Service of Pakistan (PSP), where he had been a top-performing officer.
He is survived by a one-year-old daughter.
According to preliminary reports, the officer had been battling depression, reportedly due to a delayed promotion, as several of his batchmates were promoted to the rank of SP last year.
It also emerged that ASP Akbar had tested positive for dengue a day earlier but had continued to perform his duties despite his illness.
