Punjab activates anti-smog guns as polluted winds from India worsen air quality

The Punjab government has launched extensive anti-smog measures as polluted winds from India drift into Pakistan, deteriorating air quality across multiple cities.

According to official sources, winds from New Delhi are entering Pakistan at a speed of around 5 kilometres per hour, while polluted air from Chandigarh, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, and Patiala is spreading towards Gujranwala, Multan, and Bahawalpur. Winds carrying pollutants from Suratgarh, Jodhpur, and Jaipur are also moving into Pakistani territory.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has cautioned that air quality in Lahore and surrounding areas is likely to decline further today.

The drop is mainly attributed to pollution caused by Diwali celebrations in India, where widespread fireworks have triggered dense smog across several cities.

In anticipation of worsening conditions, the Punjab government initiated emergency actions last night, including large-scale water sprinkling and the operation of anti-smog guns in high-risk zones.

EPA officials said the anti-smog guns are active in key areas such as Karim Block, Allama Iqbal Town, Multan Road, Ravi Pul, Nishtar Colony, Upper Mall Scheme, Shahdara Flyover, Thokar Niaz Baig, GT Road, and Shahdara.

Authorities expect a slight improvement in air quality between 1.00pm and 5.00pm, but remain on high alert.

Citizens have been advised to wear masks, limit outdoor activities during peak smog hours, and follow health safety guidelines.

Officials emphasised that public awareness and cooperation are crucial to mitigate the health effects of smog and enhance the effectiveness of ongoing anti-pollution efforts.
