Supreme Court allows live streaming of 26th Constitutional Amendment case

The Supreme Court’s constitutional bench on Tuesday approved petitions seeking live streaming of the court’s proceedings, announcing that the case regarding the 26th Constitutional Amendment will be broadcast live on the Supreme Court’s official YouTube channel.

An eight-member constitutional bench headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan heard the petitions challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment.

During the hearing, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar’s counsel, Shahid Jameel, informed the court that objections had been raised to their petition regarding the formation of a full court, and an appeal had been filed in the chamber. He requested that the matter be decided first.

Justice Aminuddin remarked that the court would first hear objections to the constitutional bench and the issue of constituting a full court.

Justice Jamal Mandokhail observed that the real problem lies in how things are misused in the country, saying, “Our intention behind live streaming was to educate people, but instead, it exposed us.”

During the proceedings, Additional Attorney General Aamir Rehman appeared before the bench. Justice Ayesha Malik asked for the Attorney General’s stance on live streaming, inquiring, “What is the government’s position regarding live streaming?”

In response, Aamir Rehman said that live streaming falls under the court’s administrative domain.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar then remarked, “So, you mean the government will agree to whatever decision the bench makes on the matter.”

The court later adjourned the hearing on the 26th Constitutional Amendment petitions until 11.30am tomorrow.
