Germany calls for immediate humanitarian action in Gaza amid crisis

The German government’s representative for humanitarian rights and humanitarian aid called for Israel to “immediately” enhance humanitarian conditions in Gaza on Monday ahead of a planned visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories.

Historically, Israel has enjoyed significant support from various political factions in Germany. However, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s stance has shifted as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has worsened.

Last month, the United Nations officially declared a famine in Gaza warning that 500,000 individuals are facing catastrophic conditions in the war torn area.

The envoy and a member of the governing Social Democrats, Lars Castellucci emphasised the need for Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza “immediately, comprehensively, sustainably and in accordance with humanitarian principles and international law”.

He condemned the “immeasurable” suffering endured by civilians, particularly children, who are caught in the conflict and bear no responsibility for it.

While Germany has increased its humanitarian aid to Gaza multiple times, Castellucci stated that such efforts are “pointless” if aid does not reach those in need.

He reaffirmed Germany’s “special responsibility” for Israel’s security and called for the “immediate release” of hostages held by Hamas, while also stressing the need for a ceasefire and advocating for a “two-state solution”.

The solution in Gaza escalated following Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, predominately civilians according to AFP tally based on Israeli data. Of the 251 hostages taken during the attack, 47 remain in Gaza with approximately 20 believed to be alive.

Israel’s military response has reportedly resulted in at least 63,459 Palestinian fatalities mostly civilians according to figures from the health ministry in Hamas-controlled Gaza, which the United Nations considers credible.
