Karachi was bracing for more rain on Thursday following two days of torrential downpours that left the city paralysed.
Civic authorities have been struggling to drain water from major roads and low-lying areas, while many neighbourhoods remained without electricity even after 36 hours.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in Karachi during the evening hours and has advised citizens to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel.
It said the current spell of rain is expected to continue until August 22.
The Sindh government has already announced the closure of educational institutions in Karachi for Thursday.
The death toll from rain-related incidents in the city has risen to 19.Due to excessive accumulation of water, many underpasses and roads were closed for traffic, and potholes appeared on many key streets throughout the city.
City’s drainage system has also failed, and water entered hundreds of homes, leaving people trapped inside their houses.
The civic administration was nowhere to be seen after the rain, many residents complained.
Many residents complained that the Mayor of Karachi and provincial ministers only visited Sharea Faisal and left after claiming that “everything is fine”.
According to traffic police, in District East, the Shaheed-e-Millat Road-Tariq Road underpass, Drigh Road underpass toward the airport; in District Central, Nazimabad No. 1 and No. 2 underpasses, Liaquatabad No. 10 underpass, and Gharibabad underpass remained closed.
According to the traffic police, water could not be drained from the Nazimabad Chowrangi underpass, and both tracks of the underpass near Sir Syed College remained closed until Wednesday morning.
Additionally, rainwater accumulation caused difficulties for citizens in several areas, including Shahrah-e-Liaquat, MA Jinnah Road, Sharae Faisal near Avari Towers, the area around FTC, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Fawwara Chowk, Denso Hall, Abdullah Haroon Road, Bahadurabad, University Road, Lasbela Chowk, Guru Mandir, Jamshed Road, Jahangir Road, Ayesha Manzil, Karimabad, Gul Bai Chowk, PTC Gate, National Highway, and Jinnah Avenue Road.
In Surjani Town Sector 4-B, the situation worsened after the rain. Water entered hundreds of homes, leaving residents trapped inside.
