Harassment of Pakistani diplomats in New Delhi intensifies

Pakistani diplomats at the Pakistani High Commission in India are facing harassment, with at least four of them having served eviction notices concerning their private, rented residences in New Delhi, The News reported on Tuesday.

They further claimed that the landlord issued notices to the diplomats before the contract expired. The further stated that Pakistani diplomats are constantly being monitored, while their gas and internet services is being cut-off time to time.

Additionally, the extension of Indian visas for 17 staff members, including diplomats, remains pending with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. The request for these visa extensions was made 3 to 5 months ago.

Furthermore, the water supply to the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi has also been cut off, while the delivery of Indian newspapers to the High Commission has also been stopped since a month and a half. The Pakistani High Commission has informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authorities.

This alleged harassment occurs amid rising tensions between Islamabad and New Delhi, following a brief armed conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors in May.

During that period, India conducted cross-border strikes into Pakistan, claiming to target terrorists responsible for an attack in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

Pakistan responded with Operation Bunyam-um-Marsoos, downing several Indian Air Force fighter jets, including three Rafales.

The conflict lasted for 87-hours and involved strikes from both sides. It resulted in the death of 40 civilians and 13 armed forces personnel martyred in Pakistan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government announced a suspension of Indus Water Treaty (IWT) with Pakistan.

However, the Permanent Court of Arbitration on the issues of general interpretation of the IWT has recently declared that India shall “let flow” the waters of the western rivers for Pakistan’s unrestricted use.
