India is committing serious violations of the Vienna Convention in its treatment of Pakistani diplomats and their families stationed in New Delhi.
According to diplomatic sources, the Indian authorities have been persistently delaying the issuance of visas for Pakistani diplomats and their dependents, with some 17 visa applications held up for four to five months.
The sources said that, in addition to the delays, officers of the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi have been forcibly evicted from their residences.
The reported harassment also includes cutting off the supply of water and newspapers to Pakistani diplomatic staff, the sources claimed.
Islamabad has formally raised the matter with the Indian government, describing the actions as blatant breaches of the Vienna Convention, which governs the treatment and privileges of diplomatic personnel.
Pakistan has urged India to immediately cease what it calls “unlawful and coercive tactics” and to fulfil its international obligations to ensure the safety, dignity, and operational freedom of accredited diplomats.
