Mother of honour killing victim arrested after defending murder

In a major breakthrough in the Balochistan honour killing case, the police have arrested Gul Jan, the mother of the victim, Bano Bibi, for releasing a video statement in which she defended the killing.

In the video statement, Gul Jan had described the murder as a “punishment” in accordance with Balochi tribal customs and traditions.

According to the police, Gul Jan was produced before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) where the court granted a two-day physical remand.

In her video statement, Gul Jan supported the murder and declared the arrested individuals innocent.

Police said that the statement was tantamount to justifying the double murder and an attempt to influence the judicial process.

In her video statement, Gul Jan claimed that her daughter Bano Bibi was killed following a jirga decision due to her alleged relationship with a boy.

She said that the boy used to make TikTok videos that angered her sons.

Gul Jan said that Bano was a mother of five children, and her eldest son is 16 years old.

“Our people did not make any unjust decision. The decision was made in accordance with Balochi customs and traditions,” she added.

She also said that Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai had no role in the decision and the jirga was held without his involvement.

However, according to the police, the main accused in the double murder, Jalal, is still absconding, and a search is underway to arrest him.

The police have registered a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act and further legal action is underway.
