Kuwait grants four-month grace period to regularise citizenship status

Kuwait’s Interior Ministry has initiated a four-month grace period for people whose citizenships were recently cancelled under the “Outstanding Services” clause. They’ll be allowed to travel using their Kuwaiti passports and begin fixing their residency status.

This move came in as a result of the government’s crackdown on fake nationality claims.

According to new rules, those who became citizens through family ties are now required to contact their respective embassies to get their valid passports or official travel documents.

These documents are essential for the process of legal residency in Kuwait. Proof of starting this process is necessary to maintain strict access to the country during the temporary extension period.

During this period, affected individuals are allowed to continue their work, study and access housing.

The official journal, Kuwait Al Youm, is expected to start publishing the names of those affected from July 19.

Officials stated that hundreds of cases are being reviewed. Many of them involved fake identities and illegal naturalisations.

In July 2025, over 1,060 people lost their Kuwaiti nationality, which was the biggest move in the country’s history.

Investigations from two decades revealed serious fraud, including cases where dead people’s identities were used to grant citizenship to others.

The temporary extension of visa revocation allowed many affected individuals to regularise their status and also avoid the instant displacement of immigrants due to revoked Kuwait citizenship.
