Babusar Highway: 250 stranded tourists rescued

Gilgit-Baltistan government spokesperson Faizullah Faraq confirmed that the rescue operation was successfully completed and about 250 tourists have been shifted to safe places.

According to the spokesperson, some people are still missing and a search operation is underway to find them. According to eyewitnesses, 10 to 15 people are still missing. On the instructions of the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, a joint search operation with the help of rescue, district administration, police, local volunteers and Pakistan Army will continue until the missing people are found.

He further told that the Babusar Highway has been the most affected by the floods and landslides, an eight-kilometer area has been destroyed, houses and crops have been destroyed by the floods in Ghizer, Astore, Thor Valley.

Also, the Naran and Babusar highways are closed at fourteen places, while the Karakoram highway has also been blocked again at various places after restoration. Hundreds of travelers are stranded on the Silk Road, where restoration work is underway.

Faraq said that free accommodation has been arranged for tourists in Chilas, while the losses of the local population are also being estimated. He said that search operations face difficulties in the darkness of night, so the operation is being resumed in daylight.

The spokesperson said that the tourists in all the vehicles seen in the footage are safe. Flooded rails caused havoc in Bolan area of Astore district, resulting in the death of a woman.

All the tourists stranded in Deosai have also been rescued, while relief and assistance activities are underway in Diamer Thor and Ghizer districts.

According to the Meteorological Department, there is a risk of further dangers due to monsoon rains until July 25, for which the administration has been instructed to remain alert.
