Pakistan highlights ongoing terrorism threat from Afghanistan at UN Assembly

During a special debate on Afghanistan at the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar, underscored the growing and enduring threat of terrorism originating from Afghanistan to Pakistan.

Iftikhar stated, “Unfortunately, Afghan territory is continuously being used against Pakistan, jeopardizing our national security and threatening peace throughout the region. We must ensure that Afghanistan does not become a safe haven for terrorists again.”

He highlighted that global terrorist networks like ISIS are now targeting the Afghan interim government, while groups such as Al-Qaeda and Khawarij continue their operations from Afghan soil. Additionally, he pointed out that the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch militants are also conducting activities from Afghanistan.

Revealing that the TTP is the largest group, comprising around 6,000 terrorists, he warned that such organizations pose a threat not only to Pakistan but also to the international community. He stressed that groups like ISIS and TTP could have devastating consequences for global peace.

Iftikhar made it clear that Afghanistan should not be used as a base for terrorism against any nation. He urged the international community to take effective measures to combat terrorist groups in Afghanistan to promote lasting peace in the region.

The Pakistani representative noted that Islamabad is facing ongoing attempts by terrorists to infiltrate from Afghanistan, and the country is taking all necessary steps to ensure its security.

During the UN meeting, various countries expressed their views on Afghanistan’s current situation; however, Pakistan’s decisive and firm stance has once again highlighted the international threat posed by terrorism.
