The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert warning of heavy monsoon rains and potential urban flooding over the next 24 to 48 hours, especially in southern Sindh, northeastern Punjab, and northern regions.
According to the advisory, intense rainfall could lead to urban flooding in the districts of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sujawal, Thatta, and Badin, with low-lying areas at high risk.
Similar situation is expected in Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot, and parts of Lahore.
The NDMA alert also flags the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Chitral, Swat, and Kumrat Valley due to accelerated glacier melting caused by intense rainfall.
According to the NDMA, there is a risk of flood due to melting of glaciers in Swat, Hanarchi, Tarsat, Handor, Darkot and Ishkoman of Gilgit-Baltistan, while heavy rains and urban flooding are expected in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Bagh and Kotli of Azad Kashmir.
According to the alert, heavy rains and thunderstorms are expected in Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, Dir, Kohistan, Bannu, Karak and Waziristan of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while flooding is likely due to heavy rains in Islamabad, Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Kasur and Mandi Bahauddin.
Heavy rains and strong winds are expected in the areas of Quetta, Ziarat, Khuzdar, Zhob, Sibi, Dera Bugti and Loralai in Balochistan.
Heavy rains are expected in the cities of Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, Tharparkar, Badin, Umerkot and Jacobabad in Sindh, while there is a risk of water accumulation in low-lying areas and disruption of the power supply in the plains of Sindh and Punjab.
