Pakistan has “strongly condemned” recent US airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, warning of the grave risks such actions pose to regional and global stability.
Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council on Sunday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, called the strikes a “clear violation of international law” and a “dangerous precedent.”
The targeted facilities, safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), are protected under international agreements. Pakistan said that attacks on them breach Security Council and IAEA resolutions and contravene international humanitarian law.
“These attacks set a dangerous precedent and pose a grave threat to the safety and security of populations across the region – and indeed, the world,” Ambassador Asim warned.
He expressed Pakistan’s solidarity with the Iranian government and people during what he described as a critical and challenging time.
Pakistan, alongside China and Russia, has submitted a draft resolution to the 15-member Council, urging immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities.
The proposed resolution also calls for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, a halt to further escalation, and a renewed diplomatic effort to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue peacefully.
Ambassador Asim called on the Security Council to act with urgency and unity. “As the body entrusted with primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security, the Security Council must act urgently and decisively,” he stressed.
Outlining key demands, he urged Council members to:
Unequivocally condemn the attacks on Iran since June 13, 2025;
Denounce the targeting of IAEA-monitored nuclear facilities;
Reaffirm the obligation to protect civilian lives and infrastructure;
Demand an immediate ceasefire;
-Promote dialogue and diplomacy in line with the UN Charter.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s principled stance, Ambassador Asim also condemned what he called Israeli aggression and expressed support for Iran’s legitimate right to self-defence under the UN Charter.
He warned that the Middle East, already suffering from chronic instability and the unresolved Palestinian issue, cannot afford a new crisis.
“We must act now to prevent the situation from spiraling further out of control,” he concluded. “Dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path forward that is the universal message from this meeting.”
