Karachi: Rickshaws banned on 20 major roads

In a bid to ease traffic congestion and streamline urban mobility, the Karachi administration has imposed a two-month ban on the entry of three-seater and five-seater rickshaws on 20 key roads across the city. The decision, based on recommendations by the DIG Traffic, was formalised through a notification issued by the Karachi Commissioner.

According to the official notification, rickshaws will be barred from accessing major thoroughfares, including Shahrah-e-Faisal, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Sher Shah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Abdullah Haroon Road, Do Talwar–Shahrah-e-Firdous, Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Mauripur Road, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub River Road, Quaidabad to Landhi 89, University Road, Korangi Road, Orangi Road, Super Highway to Malir Halt, and Surjani to Abdullah Chowk.

The notification further stated that traffic police have been granted enforcement powers to ensure compliance with the ban throughout the two months.

This move follows a similar ban imposed last month on 11 roads, which reportedly failed to achieve desired results due to poor enforcement. Complaints had surfaced regarding traffic disruptions caused by rickshaws operating on unauthorised routes, prompting renewed restrictions.

Authorities hope that the latest restrictions will help reduce congestion and improve traffic flow on some of the city’s busiest arteries.
