In a significant Eid ul Azha relief measure, the Punjab government has approved a 90-day special remission in sentences for prisoners across the province.
The decision, made on the instructions of Chief Minister Punjab, was formalized through a notification issued by the Home Secretary on Wednesday.
According to the Punjab Home Department, the concession will benefit around 450 inmates, while nearly 270 prisoners are expected to be released, enabling them to spend Eid ul Azha with their families.
The sentence reduction has been granted under Rule 216 of the Pakistan Prisons Rules, 1978. However, the relief will not apply to individuals convicted of serious and high-profile crimes.
Prisoners convicted of terrorism, sectarian violence, sedition, or anti-state activities are excluded from the remission.
