The Karachi administration has imposed a two-month ban on dumping waste into the city’s stormwater drains, with effect from May 26 to July 24.
The restriction has been enforced under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code, declaring garbage disposal into drains a punishable offence during this period.
According to a notification issued by the Commissioner of Karachi, the ban applies equally to sanitation workers, recyclers, and the general public. The move aims to ensure effective cleaning of drains and to improve the drainage system ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.
Officials have stated that throwing garbage into drains leads to serious issues, including blockages in drainage systems, urban flooding, and environmental pollution. In light of these concerns, local police stations have been authorised to register complaints and take action against violators under the applicable law.
