In response to escalating tensions in the region, Pakistan has decided to request an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to address recent acts of aggression and provocation by India. Diplomatic efforts have been intensified to bring global attention to what Pakistan describes as India’s destabilizing and dangerous actions.
According to official sources, Pakistan plans to brief the UNSC on India’s aggressive behavior, highlighting the risks these actions pose to regional peace and stability. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has instructed Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN to take urgent steps to convene the Security Council meeting.
Dar emphasized the need to expose India’s reckless conduct and violations of international norms at the highest diplomatic platform. One major issue expected to be raised is India’s repeated violations of the Indus Waters Treaty, including its recent decision to block the flow of water in the Chenab River through the Baglihar Dam.
In addition to the Baglihar Dam, India is reportedly planning to disrupt water flow in the Jhelum River via the Kishanganga Dam, as part of what Pakistani officials describe as a larger pattern of “water aggression.” Both dams have been longstanding sources of legal and diplomatic conflict between the two countries.
Sources indicate that Pakistan intends to present the issue of India’s potential suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty to the international community. The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful coexistence but warned that it possesses the full capability to respond effectively to any form of Indian provocation.
A report submitted to the government by the Indus Water Commission outlines how India has violated treaty provisions by constructing three major dams — Baglihar (2005), Kishanganga (2010), and Ratle (2016) — all of which faced legal challenges at international forums including the World Bank and Neutral Experts.
Pakistan accuses India of using incidents like the recent Pulwama-style attack in Pahalgam as a pretext to undermine international agreements, while consistently violating them regardless of circumstances.
